Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemetery regulations require prior written approval for any above-ground structure. Families must submit architectural drawings, material specifications, and in some cases a structural engineering letter before work can begin. Aboveground Memorials handles this submission process on behalf of every client, coordinating with cemetery administrators and following up on approvals so that families are not left navigating institutional bureaucracy on their own.

Foundation Requirements

Above-ground tombs in New Jersey require reinforced concrete foundations that extend below the state's frost line, a minimum of 36 inches in most locations. This depth prevents the seasonal heaving that can shift lighter foundations and crack the stone above. Our engineering team specifies foundation dimensions based on the weight of the structure, the characteristics of the cemetery soil, and the individual cemetery's own standards.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-affiliated cemeteries — Catholic, Jewish, and others — often carry additional requirements for above-ground structures. These may include restrictions on height, requirements for specific religious symbols, or rules about the orientation of the entryway. Aboveground Memorials has worked with religious cemeteries across New Jersey for generations and understands the institutional landscape well enough to anticipate requirements before the application stage.

Our Collection

Our Mausoleums Collection

Above-ground tomb structures range from single-crypt lawn monuments to full walk-in family mausoleums. The defining characteristic of all above-ground burial is that the interment space sits at or above grade, rather than below ground. This design keeps the memorial visible and accessible at all times, and it holds personal meaning for families whose tradition or preference favors above-ground burial. Aboveground Memorials builds structures across this spectrum — small and dignified for single individuals, larger and more architectural for families who want a structure that will serve multiple generations. Every structure includes full design, engineering, and installation services, and every piece of granite is hand-carved in our Morris County, NJ workshop.

Granite Options

Granite is the material Aboveground Memorials recommends for above-ground tomb construction in New Jersey. Its density and crystalline structure resist the freeze-thaw cycle that is characteristic of the Northeast's climate, and it holds carved lettering with clarity across decades. We source American-made granite as well as select imported stones in colors ranging from classic gray to absolute black to red and blue varieties. The choice of granite color and finish affects both the visual character of the finished structure and the way carved elements read from a distance.

Custom Design Process

Custom design is the foundation of every Aboveground Memorials project. Our design team meets with families to understand the person being honored, the character of the cemetery setting, and the family's own aesthetic preferences. From that conversation we produce drawings showing the structure from multiple angles before any stone is cut. Revisions are part of the process. The final approved design goes to our Morris County workshop, where artisans hand-carve all lettering, imagery, and decorative details before the structure is prepared for installation.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Building an above-ground tomb at Aboveground Memorials follows six defined steps. First, the family visits our Morris County showroom in Madison — reviewing materials, discussing the design, and establishing the scope of the project. Second, our design team prepares drawings and, where helpful, rendered images showing the finished structure. Third, we submit the design to the cemetery for approval, managing all correspondence until written authorization is received. Fourth, our workshop team cuts the granite components from American-made stone and begins the hand-carving process — lettering, portraiture, and decorative elements all completed by hand. Fifth, finishing work is applied: polishing, texturing, and the installation of any bronze hardware or accent elements. Sixth, our crew transports the completed structure to the cemetery, pours the foundation, and installs the tomb on-site, leaving the lot ready for the family's first visit.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a mausoleums?

Timelines for above-ground tomb construction typically run from three to six months for simpler designs and up to eight or nine months for larger structures with extensive carving. The main variables are design complexity, granite availability, and the speed of cemetery approval. We provide a schedule at the start of each project.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Aboveground Memorials serves all 14 New Jersey counties, handling delivery and installation at cemeteries throughout the state. Our team manages the permit and approval process directly with each cemetery.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Every above-ground tomb we build is engineered to meet the structural standards of the specific cemetery where it will be installed. We obtain written approval before fabrication begins and our foundations meet New Jersey's frost-depth requirements.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Absolutely. Many families bring photographs, personal drawings, or images of other memorials as design references. Our workshop has reproduced family portraits in bas-relief, carved specific floral arrangements, and worked with a wide range of religious and personal imagery over more than 80 years of practice.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. Aboveground Memorials regularly includes veteran recognition within above-ground tomb designs — branch insignia carved in granite, VA-compliant bronze plaques, and inscription formats that honor military service with appropriate placement and proportion.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
